About The Trust

The Sir Francis Chichester Trust was set up in 1968 as a stand-alone Charity, to commemorate Sir Francis Chichester’s solo circumnavigation of the world in his yacht, Gipsy Moth IV.

He inspired the whole nation throughout his adventurous career – from pioneer World War pilot to daring solo yachtsman. He challenged us all to reach further and higher in our lives.

At his request, the Trust was founded to provide funding for 16-22 year olds from Devon, Plymouth and Torbay to attend an Outward Bound course. Thanks to our generous donors, we’re able to send up to 30 young people every year on this once-in-a-lifetime experience, that will see them achieving more than they ever thought possible.

Thanks to our donors, if you’re successful in applying for a place on an 14-day Summit Adventure or 19-day Pinnacle Expedition, the Sir Francis Chichester Trusts will cover 100% of your course cost. With a place on the course usually costing up to £1,900*, this is a truly unique opportunity not to be missed.

*You will be liable for travel costs for your journey to the coach transfer meeting point.

Who should apply?

  • Young people living in Devon aged 16-22 at the time of the course.
  • Those who've had few opportunities of this kind and have not attended an Outward Bound course previously
  • Young people who lack confidence or would benefit from time away from their current circumstances.

The course isn’t suitable for young people who are on probation or subject to a Youth Offending Order.

The Application Process
  1. Return your application to us by Tuesday 1 February 2022.
  2. Interview dates will be Thursday 10 March 2022 and Friday 11 March 2022 in Exeter.
  3. You’ll be informed by spring of the year of your course whether or not you have been successful in gaining a place.

Outward Bound Courses

If you’re facing a new challenge, like stepping up to sixth form, heading to uni or trying to get your first job, the Summit or Pinnacle courses will help you to get ahead. You’ll enjoy authentic outdoor activities in National Parks and wild places, guided by highly-qualified instructors. It will be a path of discovery. A chance to have fun, be curious and make new friends. Before you know it, you’ll be stepping outside your comfort zone and discovering your talents. Your confidence will grow and you'll learn how to believe in yourself.

You have a choice of four incredible locations – Loch Eil in the Scottish Highlands, Ullswater in the Lake District, and Aberdovey and Ogwen Cottage in Snowdonia, Wales. Find out more about The Outward Bound Trust centres.

The Sir Francis Chichester Trust offers a complimentary coach transfer service, which picks you up from a regional transport hub. Please note, you will be responsible for the cost getting to the regional hub.
