David Glynn - Ullswater, The Lake District, 1982

I began work as an apprentice in an Engineering company when I left school at 16 in 1981 and in the following year I won 'Apprentice Of The Year' - the prize was a three week Outward Bound course at Ullswater.

At first I didn't really think that it was much of a prize, but once there I had the time of my life. I was never keen on heights but the challenges I faced got me over this.

At 17 years of age, I learned so much and it's stayed with me ever since.

I'm now the managing director of a software company and have setup a number of businesses from scratch - many of the challenges faced in the Lakes all those years ago helped to build my character and the challenges and achievements of that time definitely help me face the calculated risks I take now in my business life.

So, a belated thanks to all concerned. Why have I waited so long? Well, my 9 year old son is off to Howtown in a few weeks with his school - St Benets, Ouston, so those memories all came flooding back to me. I'm sure he'll have a fantastic time.

Best wishes

Dave
